Millimeter Wave

FCC opens door for new wireless tech

The FCC moves to open up previously unavailable spectrum to make way for "millimeter wave" wireless last mile solutions. The point-to-point wireless technology, developed by Loea Communications, got the go ahead this week from the FCC to operate in the 71-76 GHz, 81-86 GHz, and 92-95 GHz bands (IDG News Service Report). Much of the spectrum was only previously usable by the government. The technology utilizes millimeter-wave transceivers to transmit "pencil beams" of information at gigabit speeds, as an alternative for companies looking for a last-mile solution other than fiber. In a separate initiative, the FCC opened up additional spectrum for 3G and advanced broadband wireless services in the 1700- and 2100-MHz bands, according to the EETimes.
